General information

Jordan is amazing interesting country, which simply amazes with the diversity of nature (from deserts to reservoirs, nature reserves and hot springs), seas (Red - the most beautiful and Dead - the most unique and healing), culture (modern and dating back more than 6 centuries), the attention and goodwill of people who sincerely We are glad to see you and will definitely greet you: “Welcome to Jordan” (although this is often said in English)... If you want to spend an unforgettable vacation and see a lot of interesting things, come to Jordan!
In my own way state system- this is the Kingdom. The full name of the country is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The state is still very young - it is not yet 50 years old, the population is about 5 million people. But the lands on which it is located are mentioned in the Bible in the Old Testament. Esau (son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham) led his flocks through the Wadi Rum desert. Jesus Christ was baptized in the Jordan River in the town of Bethany.
total area 89,213 sq. km, of which land – 88,884 sq. km, water – 329 sq. km.
The modern capital of Jordan is Amman, known in history as Rabat Amun, and during the Roman Empire as Philadelphia. Now half the population lives there, i.e. 2.5 million people.
The population is about 4 million people. National composition - Arabs (Jordanians and Palestinians) - about 98%; people from the Caucasus (referred to by the common collective name “Circassians”) - about 1%; Armenians - about 1%.

Transport

There is only one seaport in Jordan - the city of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Queen Amia International Airport is located south of the capital. This is one of the most modern airports in the entire Middle East. Jordan is connected to neighboring countries by international-class highways. From Damascus, the capital of Syria, Amman can be reached by weekly train or daily buses. In cities there are inexpensive taxis. The average fare per kilometer is 500 fils (70 cents). However, if the taxi does not have a meter (and this sometimes happens in Jordan), you should agree on the price with the driver in advance.

Currency - Jordanian dinar (1 dinar = 1.5 US dollars). A dinar is divided into 1000 fils. Due to inflation, fils are no longer taken into account in calculations, although coins are in circulation and some sellers, out of old habit, indicate the price of their goods in four-digit numbers. The more commonly used part of the dinar is “kyrsh” (1 dinar = 1OO kyrsh). Often a coin of 10 fils is called “1 qirsh”. Money can be exchanged at the airport, hotels and exchange offices. Payment for goods and services usually occurs in dinars.

Time is 1 hour behind Moscow; Daylight saving time is practiced due to the discrepancy between the transition dates, for which in Jordan and Russia the “lag” can be 2 hours.

The language is Arabic, English is very common, and there are people who speak Russian.

The vast majority of the population (90%) professes Sunni Islam. There are also small communities of Shia and Christians of various denominations.

Tips are given in gratitude for good service to hotel staff (0.5 dinars), tour guide (2 dinars per person), driver (1.5 dinars per person), horse driver in Petra (2 dinars), etc., this is the practice - unlike Russia - is widespread abroad. Tips usually make up the bulk of the earnings of Jordanians working in the tourism sector - the employment contract usually specifies some insignificant amount and the addition “+ tip”, so ignoring this issue may simply offend the Jordanian.

Electricity

Electricity - 220 volts

Features of staying in the country

FOR EXCURSIONS - you will need comfortable shoes and sports clothing (otherwise it will be difficult for you to climb to the top row of the amphitheater in Jerash or take a horseback ride in Petra). Not all hotels offer quick ironing of clothes, and this service is not very cheap, so preference should be given to clothes made from wrinkle-resistant materials.
DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE good sunglasses, the medications you need (in Jordan there may only be analogues with names unknown to you), films for your camera or video camera.
WOMEN'S CLOTHING, if possible, should not be provocative - do not forget that most local population- Muslim men and a too short skirt, open shoulders and back far from the beach can attract increased attention to you (do you need it?).
PHOTO SERVICES - much more expensive than in Moscow, especially in Aqaba. Photographing people is only possible with their consent, and strategic sites (border points and airports) are prohibited.
TELEVISION - in some hotels (for example, Aquamarina in Aqaba) you can find Russian TV channels. Sometimes films with Russian subtitles are shown on Israeli television.
WARNING - while swimming in the Dead Sea, you need to protect your eyes: it is best to wear goggles for swimming in the pool; in extreme cases, sunglasses are suitable - they will protect your eyes from accidental splashes. You can remove any trapped salt with a corner of a towel (just blot it gently).

Hotels provide buffet meals; European dishes and national cuisine.
Eating in cafes and restaurants is inexpensive and is not fraught with intestinal infections.
Alcoholic drinks of local and foreign production can be purchased at any time, except for the month of Muslim fasting; among local strong drinks, you can try “arak” - it is diluted with water, has the color of milk, as well as the specific smell and taste of anise. Drinks in restaurants where meals may be included in the price of your program (water, juice, beer, tea, coffee and wine) are served for a fee - about 1 dinar (well, this is the case everywhere...).

Souvenirs

Souvenirs - wicker rugs from Madaba, bottles of multi-colored sand from Petra (it is better to buy in Petra itself - only there they use real sand in natural shades), crafts made from olive wood, ceramics and copper utensils, jewelry(gold is cheap in Jordan, the price of the metal itself is fixed, but the price for work can sometimes be “cut down” by almost half); Bedouin black silver jewelry and much more. You can purchase Jordanian-made cosmetics based on Dead Sea products. As for the famous healing mud, we do not recommend buying it packaged at 5 dinars per 500 grams. It is better to ask one of the staff at the Dead Sea hotel to help you find it on the shore. The service will cost you 1-3 dinars, depending on the difficulties associated with its provision and depending on the amount of “mined”. The best mud has a "radical black" color. It can be transported in several plastic bags (“matryoshka principle”). Be aware that the mud is very heavy!

General information about the country

Time

Time differences with Moscow: in winter - minus 1 hour, in summer - the time is the same. Standard time zone: UTC/GMT +2 hours.

Population

Currently, about 6 million people live in Jordan. 95% of the population are Arabs. Many residents of modern Jordan are former Palestinian Arabs who have been unusually friendly towards Russians since Soviet times. This country also has national minorities and Europeans.

Language

The official language in Jordan is Arabic. But many residents of this country use English language which is taught in schools. Hotel staff speak English, and guides will offer you all excursions in Russian.

Currency

The currency of Jordan is the Jordanian dinar, which is divided into 100 piastres. One US dollar contains 0.71 dinars (JOD) - current as of 04/2016. The coins and bills bear images of the royal family and are signed in both Arabic and English.

In circulation there are banknotes in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 dinars and coins of various denominations.

Banks in Jordan are usually open from 08.30 to 12.30 and from 15.30 to 17.30 from Saturday to Thursday (the tellers close at 12.30). If you find yourself in Jordan during Ramadan, remember that most banks are open from 08.30 to 10.00 and it is difficult to find a bank open after lunch.

Payment for services, excursions, and goods is made in dinars, and you will have to change foreign currency - it is almost never accepted. It is better to exchange currency at the airport, hotels, banks and specialized exchange offices. Credit cards and traveler's checks may not be accepted everywhere - carry cash dinars with you, especially when traveling inland. But if in a large hotel or supermarket you can accept American Express and Visa for payment, then Diner's Club or MasterCard are accepted much less often in Jordan. So try to stock up on local currency in advance at a favorable rate.

Climate

Since most of the country is desert, Jordan's climate is dry and warm almost all year round. There is not much precipitation - from 25-50 to 200 mm per year. The wettest part of the country is the northwestern part. The climate of this part of Jordan is influenced by the Mediterranean Sea, with 300 to 800 mm of rainfall per year and natural farming possible. Mostly rain occurs from November to March.

The subtropical zone near the Mediterranean Sea and the rest of the country with a sharply continental climate form two main climatic zones. In January there are average air temperatures from +8°C to +14°C, and in July usually from +28°C to +40°C. Do not forget about the large difference between day and night temperatures; even in summer the nights can be quite cool. Summer is always sunny and without precipitation; sandstorms occur in the desert part of the country.

The south of the country in the Gulf of Aqaba region is a resort area where you can relax all year round. In summer, of course, it is a little hot here, just like in nearby Egypt, but the water temperature in both the Red and Dead Seas never drops below +21°C. Nevertheless, best time To visit Jordan it is spring or autumn.

Transport

It is very convenient to travel around Jordan by taxi, especially since it is very inexpensive, and the roads are in very good condition. Traffic in this country is on the right, speed is 80-110 km. per hour, and in cities - within 60 km per hour. On the Amman-Aqaba highway, the maximum speed allowed is 110 km per hour.

But if you want to travel while driving yourself, cities like Amman or Irbid are not for you. Chaotic movement in all directions, complex signs may not be to your liking.

Connection

Jordan has all modern telecommunications. This is, first of all, the Internet. There are many Internet cafes in cities where you can sit and learn news in Russian. Large hotels necessarily have their own network access options.

If you buy yourself a local SIM card, you can communicate with Moscow very inexpensively. A minute in this case will cost you about 0.7 dinars. And if you call from the hotel, you will have to pay much more; international calls are rounded up not in your favor - strictly from 3 minutes.

Although telephony in Jordan is quite well developed, calling from street payphones is not profitable, and they do not always work. Mobile communication is much more convenient. But if you want to use the card and find a suitable machine, to call the country you should dial 8-10-962 (international telephone code Jordan) - subscriber number. Some city codes: Jerash, Irbid, Ajlun - 02; Aqaba, Petra, El-Karak - 03; Es Salt, Madaba - 05; Amman, Naur, Sahab - 06; At-Tafilah - 7; Zarqa - 09.

To call to Russia you need to dial 007 (Russia code - 7), then the city code and phone number. For example, a call to Moscow: 007 - 495 - phone number

Here, beach and therapeutic holidays are available all year round on the coasts of the Red and Dead Sea, excursions to legendary city Petra and exciting shopping, allowing you to take away remarkable gifts and souvenirs as souvenirs of this country.

What to bring as a souvenir?

Given the rich Jordanian craft traditions, as well as the very rich history of the country, the list of goods purchased by tourists will be quite extensive.

Popular

    The easiest way to take a piece of it with you is to purchase clay magnets or ceramic mugs, which have a colorful image of Petra or the Wadi Rum desert, biblical scenes, as well as palm trees or camels.

    Of all this variety, it is best to purchase a popular and authentic souvenir with the image of Petra. It is this legendary city that is associated when Jordan is mentioned.

    Often, when visiting souvenir shops in Jordan, you can see charming vases with a matte pink surface. Delicate shades interspersed with white splashes are reminiscent of the color of the sand of the Wadi Rum desert and the Petra mountains.

    Colorful products made from "Nabatean glass" have their own secret. If you wet the vase with water, shades and veins will begin to appear against the pink background, reminiscent of gemstones of blue, green, turquoise or reddish-brown.

    Another souvenir with which Jordan will be associated is paintings of colorful sand in a bottle, made by Aboriginal people at the site of future purchase. Residents of this country, using a funnel and a knitting needle, pour sand into a container, and then carefully form bright and picturesque miniatures from it, skillfully drawing various thematic pictures:

    1. Camels, moving through the desert;
    2. Treasury of Elhazn in Petra;
    3. Mount Sky;
    4. Castle in Ajlun;
    5. Ruins of Herod's Palace;
    6. Temple of Hercules;
    7. Castles in the desert.

    Since the sand for these products is taken from rocks, these bottles are advertised as "Treasures of Petra".

    Sand bottle paintings come in different sizes and, accordingly, have different prices, but due to the fact that the desert is reclaiming territory, such souvenirs can soon turn into memories of the wonderful history of the most unusual and great city of Petra.

  • Finally, another popular gift that tourists bring home after visiting Jordan is hookah- a truly Arab souvenir. Without it, it is impossible to imagine the leisure time of the inhabitants of this country. The variety of shapes, colors and sizes of this souvenir will impress any traveler.
  • Inexpensive

    Every city in Jordan has small local markets where you can find great, inexpensive souvenirs. At the same time, an important and pleasant feature of local traders is unobtrusiveness And good nature.

    Buying even a small souvenir can turn into a real event, because before introducing you to your assortment, the shop owner treat you to a cup of aromatic coffee.

    An excellent option for an inexpensive but pleasant souvenir from such shops would be:

    • Authentic olive wood crafts;
    • Ceramic and copper cookware;
    • Bedouin handmade decorations;
    • Stone animal figurines;
    • Traditional arab clothing.

    The only point that every tourist should remember is that bargaining is unacceptable in Jordan.

    Edible

    Traditional products that are usually bought here are: sweets, fruits And nuts and also special national coffee.

    • Sweets, which are produced in Jordan, are considered the best Arabic dishes; their taste is not inferior to Turkish delicacies. Sesame cookies, traditional baklava, katayef pies, guava desserts and candied fruits look especially appetizing.
    • Very popular among tourists, unique Jordan coffee, to which it is customary to add cardamom. This invigorating drink has a special warming aroma. According to tradition, it is cooked in a Turk and then poured into small cups. Some gourmets also prefer to buy hibiscus tea.
    • In markets and shops in Jordan you can purchase delicious nuts, which the seller will fry in front of the buyer. These edible souvenirs are sold everywhere here, and they cost an order of magnitude less than in other countries.

      The taste of Jordan nuts cannot be compared with anything else, since pistachios, almonds, hazelnuts or cashews are added with various seasonings in the form of pepper or yogurt coating.

      It is also quite popular among travelers to buy assorted lightly salted nuts.

      National

      Anyone who wants to buy not just a simple souvenir from Jordan, but something really serious and interesting, should consider purchasing national products, which is sold here in a wide variety.

      • The traditional craft of Bedouin women for many centuries was weaving colorful carpets with national motives. These colorful, small-sized wickerwork, which are made by craftswomen from the city of Madaba, will fit perfectly into your home interior along with other souvenirs from this country.
      • Another national souvenir from Madaba - beautiful ceramic mosaic panels, as well as plates, trays, salad bowls and other utensils made using this technique. A similar tradition developed among the residents due to the fact that after clearing the city ruins, they found a mosaic map of Jerusalem in them.
      • Bright and colorful, but also incredibly fragile "Hebron glass"- a souvenir named after the ancient settlement located on the western bank of the river.

        Decorative item, combining simplicity of form, secret glass coloring, as well as gold and silver shades, looks like a real work of art.

        Products from Hebron have been produced for 2000 years, and the sand for their production is delivered from neighboring villages.

        Souvenirs with Arabic script:
