So, the basic idea of ​​Dreadnought is almost the same as what was implemented in Fractured Space. There are huge, clumsy combat spaceships that are launched into space filled with asteroids, space stations and other cyclopean objects. Yager has simplified the MOBA-like structure of the playing field and gameplay of Fractured Space - 8 vs 8 person battles here are fought for frags or for control of the field. Team deathmatch up to 100 points is a standard Deathmatch. In Onslaught mode, a command ship appears on the field, which must be protected from opponents and waves of NPC fighters and light frigates. The battle is fought up to 300 points, each ship has its own cost, and the command ship, of course, is the most expensive. Well, the third mode is Conquest, in which you must capture and hold control points, and points are awarded for the entire area held, including around your ship, and the larger the ship, the larger part of the field it paints in your color. Unfortunately, Conquest cards are less common in rotation than others.







Like World of Warships and Fractured Space, ships in Dreadnought are divided into classes. Actually heavy and clumsy dreadnoughts, capable of delivering and withstanding colossal damage and “sinking” opponents with one broadside. Lightweight, with great speed and capable of fast tactical warp jumps, corvettes can cause a lot of trouble even for large ships by going behind the lines, using rapid-fire cannons or launching heavy torpedoes at close range. Long-range artillery cruisers that sweep almost the entire field with powerful guns similar to rail guns, but are practically defenseless in close combat. Support cruisers or, more simply put, field medics/magicians. And destroyers, occupying a middle position between dreadnoughts and artillery cruisers.







Naturally, Dreadnought is a team game, and you need to choose a ship based on the overall configuration of the fleet and the current mission. A well-coordinated fleet is capable of literally suppressing the enemy, providing fire and medical support to its comrades. The game uses both ancient combat techniques of rowing and sailing fleets, such as ramming or linear formation with a concentration of fire on the flagship, and elements of air combat, for example, flying at extremely low altitudes with camouflage behind folds of terrain or gaining superiority in height.







Yager Development carefully copied all the elements of World of Tanks. After the battle, ships receive their own and free experience, for which they can research new modules and unlock ships of higher levels. The first two levels of equipment are upgraded in literally 5 hours, but from the third, a long monotonous grind begins. There are three factions in the game with their own branches of technology, and somewhere in the wilds of the official website you can find pages telling about their differences and even outlining the plot of the game. Something about transhumans and the war for the Solar System, but if you don’t take special care of this, then for you the three branches of technology will remain just three branches of technology. Relatively speaking, “Russian”, with an emphasis on the power of weapons, “Eastern” (these are transhumans) with an emphasis on technology and support ships, and a balanced “Western”. Each of the branches has more ships of one class or another; naturally, they also have premium vehicles belonging to some game heroes. Yager even released a special comic book based on the Dreadnought universe, but, again, the plot in this game is so unnecessary that it’s even a shame.







Dreadnought uses Unreal Engine 4, and the combat looks pretty good dynamically. The ships are colorfully destroyed and explode, the levels themselves are impressive with the gigantic elements and design. By the way, one of the levels in Conquest mode seems to be made in memory of the studio's very first game, Yager. The ships themselves also look good, in their outlines there is something left of their sea ancestors, but there is also all the tinsel we are familiar with from sci-fi like Battlestar Galactica, such as rotating main-caliber turrets and gun ports. What's bad about Dreadnought is the customization of your captain, which looks at the level of games from the early 2000s. But the real disaster here is with the menu. To get to the technology tree or research and replace a component, you need to make five or six illogical transitions across different screens. This is kind of crazy.







The battles themselves, in accordance with the specifics of the technique, turned out to be leisurely, but quite hot. As in Fractured Space and World of Tanks, it is often a game of hide and seek behind obstacles, interspersed with unexpected raids behind enemy lines. Overall interesting, if not for one “but”. Selection of opponents in Dreadnought is carried out within fleets of three tiers. The first, “Recruit”, includes ships of class I and II. In the second, “Veteran”, ships of classes III and IV. And in the third, “Legend”, ships of IV and V classes. And if in battles of the “Recruit” level the difference between ships of I and II classes is not so noticeable, although it undoubtedly exists, then in battles of the “Veteran” level ships of IV class are head and shoulders above the most pumped ships of III class, leaving them no chance to win. And let me remind you, you will have to spend a lot of time on leveling up at this level.







However, the main problem of Dreadnought is not even this, but the general decline in interest in such games and the niche nature of this particular product. There are simply very few people on the game servers. If at the time of release on Steam 2-2.5 thousand people were simultaneously playing Dreadnought, then after three weeks only 500-900 people remained, and this figure continues to decline. The selection of opponents in the most popular “Veteran” class can take two or more minutes, and you will remember almost all the players’ nicknames literally after ten to fifteen battles.

As for monetization, as in all similar games, it consists of purchasing a Premium account with accelerated leveling, items for customizing the captain and ships, and purchasing special high-class ships. You can play without Premium, but then get ready to grind.







It's a shame because Dreadnought isn't actually a bad game. Yes, it is secondary in relation to World of Warships and Fractured Space, but it has a certain charm. Sci-fi setting, the feeling of a huge ship obeying your orders, a sense of teamwork in battle, “thoughtful” battles.
